Concrete trucks driving in a backward serpentine pattern and performing alley backups were just some of the sights to behold at the Ready Mixed Concrete Association of Ontario’s (RMCAO) second concrete truck rodeo.
“It’s a combination of maneuverability moves and real life situations,” explained RMCAO marketing and communications director Tom Bellis.
The course was composed of eight obstacles and a pre-trip inspection checklist. It is a deductive point system where the drivers starts off with a perfect score and then incur a points deduction for every obstacle they touch. At the end of the day the driver with the highest score wins the top prize of $1,500. Drivers placing in the top five receive prizes.
“They have a great day and they enjoy it. It’s one day of us trying to show our appreciation as an industry as a whole.”
After taking a 40-year hiatus, RMCAO brought the rodeo back last year.
“We had noticed that a lot of our active members were putting on their own rodeos. We wanted to build more awareness, as well as show them our appreciation for their inputs into the industry,” said Bellis.
Thirty drivers from throughout RMCAO’s membership competed at the Aug. 18 event held at the Miller Group’s waste facility in Pickering, Ont. The competition has to be limited to 30 drivers so companies often hold their own mini rodeos to determine which drivers they send to the “provincials”.
“Unfortunately last year’s provincial association winner lost his company’s event and wasn’t able to defend his title this year,” said Bellis.
“It just shows the breadth and reach of the different abilities of the drivers. Although the course may be similar from year to year it takes a certain mindset to get into the groove of the challenge.”
