TORONTO—Toronto-based Quadrangle Architects won three awards in three separate competitions for their renovation and expansion of 60 Atlantic Avenue, a 115-year-old heritage property in Toronto’s Liberty Village.

Quadrangle was commissioned by Hullmark Developments. The awards handed out were a Toronto Urban Design Award, an ARIDO Award and an Architect’s Journal Retrofit Award from London, UK.

The 60 Atlantic project involved adaptive reuse and mixed-use intensification in a neighbourhood that was formerly industrial. Design features included blending a contemporary Corten steel and glass service core into the original facade. A newly excavated outdoor courtyard and accessible main entrance were intended to transform the intersection into a dynamic hub. Landscaping and a "60" supergraphic by local artist Pascal Paquette were featured along the building’s edges along Liberty Street and Jefferson Avenue.

Quadrangle used new grey brick on the project to contrast with the original buff brick to reflect the building’s transformation. In the interior, an artistic film with a historic map of the neighbourhood was introduced to reflect the site’s past and to provide shade and privacy.

Reflecting on the awards, Richard Witt, principal at Quadrangle, said, "We are overwhelmed to receive these three awards recognizing the project’s urban contribution and unique approach to adaptive reuse on the same night. We are encouraged by the growing support for investing in the latent value of the city’s existing building stock."

Quadrangle was presented with the Toronto Urban Design Award in the category of low-scale buildings in context on Sept. 16 at Toronto’s Palais Royale.

Quadrangle’s ARIDO Award was presented in the restoration and adaptive reuse category by the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) at a gala that took place at the Hilton Toronto Hotel.
