League of Champions website launched

After months of hard work, the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA), along with MySafeWork, officially launched its signature League of Champions website.

The ambitious safety initiative, started by a handful of construction leaders, hopes the industry from all levels and disciplines will be part of the commitment to build a better and stronger safety culture in the province, states the OGCA.

The league is a conduit to raise the bar of health and safety, said OGCA president Clive Thurston.

"We want to educate everybody from the students, to the apprentices, and to the boardroom on what it means to have a proper safety culture in Ontario."

For a number of years there has been a strong desire from the government and construction stakeholders to change the safety culture, but the mechanisms and tools to make a significant difference were always a challenge, explained Thurston.

"We have done well, but we can do better," he said.

This is where the league’s mission comes in. The website, www.theleagueofchampions.com, is part of a larger vision to prevent accidents and fatalities in the workplace and will act as a safety hub for current industry leaders and the future generation of professionals.

"This is a construction effort. We are inviting all subtrades, suppliers and anyone dealing in the construction industry to join us and be a part of the league. This league belongs to the industry and everyone is welcome to join," Thurston said.

The website contains information on how to join the league and become a member champion.

Walsh Canada, Ball Construction Ltd. and EllisDon Corporation have received their charters and are already promoting the league and encouraging industry stakeholders to join.

Along with a series of soft launches leading up to the website, there has been a number of organizations that have expressed interest in becoming major sponsors.

In response, the league will create a "sponsors category" which will be added to the website in a few weeks.

For the upcoming Safety Week, which runs May 2 to 6,  the league will be involved in several events sporting their jerseys in an effort to promote and bring attention to their commitment to health and safety.

EllisDon will be wearing their jerseys and so will Ontario Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn, Thurston mentioned.

"It’s an industry effort. The more we train the next generation, the better equipped they will be to ensure accidents and incidents don’t happen on our construction sites. Nobody should be injured in this business, every accident is preventable."
