Canada Green Building Council begins search for 2018 Product of the Year award winner

OTTAWA — The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) has announced the 2018 CaGBC Green Building Product of the Year Award competition is now open.

The CaGBC initiated the Product of the Year award in 2015 to encourage Canadian companies to develop sustainable building products and materials to better support the green building industry, a media statement said.

The award is sponsored by UL Environment, a product safety testing, certification and inspection organization.

Product submissions are assessed based on four criteria: sustainability, transparency and verification, innovation, and application.

Entrants to the competition must be a national CaGBC member to apply, and the product must be manufactured or designed in Canada to be eligible.

A jury of experts will select the winner. The deadline to submit is Feb. 13.

“This is our fourth year recognizing a Green Building Product of the Year, and each year the calibre of submissions increases,” said Thomas Mueller, president and CEO of the CaGBC, in the statement.

“We encourage Canadian manufacturers and technology providers to submit their innovative products which support the transition to a low carbon economy, promote health and wellness of occupants, or improve overall environmental performance of buildings.”

The top three entrants will be asked to provide a short video about their product that will be shown to delegates at Building Lasting Change 2018, CaGBC’s National Conference and Showcase, taking place this year from June 5 to 7 at Toronto’s Beanfield Centre.

The winner will be presented with the award at the Leadership Awards Gala in Toronto on June 6.
