Toronto Society of Architects offers three programs for Doors Open

Toronto Society of Architects offers three programs for Doors Open

TORONTO — As part of this year’s Doors Open Toronto, which will take place May 27 to 28, the Toronto Society of Architects (TSA) has organized three special programs reflecting on this year’s theme, City of Sound, including a public panel discussion, architectural studio tours and a one-hour walking tour.

Doors Open Toronto is organized by the City of Toronto in partnership with the community which provides rare public access for one weekend only to architecturally and culturally significant buildings across the city.

It will feature more than 140 sites for exploration, walking tours and more.

The events include:

Architects Talk: Listening to Spaces on Sunday, May 28, 2 p.m. at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, 506 Bloor St. W.

Have you ever stopped to listen to a space? Though invisible, sound is no less of an architectural material than wood, concrete or light — one that can be shaped and designed. This year’s Architects Talk will bring together five diverse sound-shaping speakers, including architects, acousticians, and researchers, for some lightning presentations to share their thoughts, work and provocations on the relationship between space and sound.

The event will include presentations by Amanda Robinson, Brigitte Shim, Joseph Clarke, Robert Sims and Tor Oiamo, and will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Stefan Novakovic of AZURE magazine.

The Shape and Sound of Performance Walking Tour on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28 at the Entertainment District (starting point is in front of the Royal Alexandra Theatre).

From the symphony to musical theatre, Toronto is home to some of the most important and ambitious performance halls in the country, but have you ever wondered why they look (and sound) the way they do? The TSA is hosting six one-hour-long tours throughout the weekend to explore the relationship between performance, sound and architecture through case-studies with styles ranging from traditional shoe-box theatres to groundbreaking vineyard halls.

Open Studio on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28 at various locations across Toronto.

Open Studio provides the public behind-the-scenes access to architectural practices who are opening their doors and inviting you to come drop by. Talk to the architects, landscape architects, planners and interior designers helping shape the city. Explore their workspaces, ranging from converted storefronts to heritage properties and community hubs, and see how buildings and landscapes go from ideas to built realities. In addition to self-guided walks through the offices, many of the studios are also offering tours and talks throughout the weekend.

There will also be a lineup of studios working across a wide variety of projects and specialties including Altius Architecture Inc., Arcadis | IBI Group, B+H Architects, Barbora Vokac Taylor Architect, Brook McIlroy, Carlo Parente Architecture, DTAH, Gow Hastings Architects, KPMB, Moriyama Teshima Architects, Q4 Architects, RAW Design, RevelHouse Architecture, Stephane LeBlanc Architects, SvN Architects + Planners, Workshop, and Zeidler Architecture.
