GIP AGGREGATES — GIP Aggregates, McCarthy Quarry won the 2023 Community Relations Award from the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association.

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. — The Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (OSSGA) recently handed out awards for community relations and progressive rehabilitation.

GIP Aggregates Inc. McCarthy Quarry received the 2023 Community Relations Award which recognizes leadership in promoting good neighbour relations, community involvement, education and industry awareness.

The quarry earned the award for its continued efforts to reduce the impact of its operations on its neighbours, which includes working constantly to improve onsite operations and taking preventative steps to reduce the noise and dust levels.

The company also keeps its neighbours notified of its blasting schedule and has measures in place to promote traffic safety. Its Community Liaison Committee strives to maintain an open dialogue with the community and address any feedback, concerns or questions that may arise during operations, indicates a release.

It also participates in local affairs such as the Trent Matters newsletter, sponsoring local youth hockey teams, the Ramara Chamber of Commerce and charity events like the Annual Food for the Poor Golf Tournament.

GIP Properties Corp. Elginburg Quarry was also awarded the Community Relations Award. The quarry is committed to daily maintenance activities and ongoing upgrades go a long way towards successfully controlling the noise and dust from its operations. At the same time, investments in transportation infrastructure and road safety technologies such as GPS trackers, help reduce traffic disturbances and safety risks.

Off-site, the quarry sponsors numerous local hockey leagues, supports events like the Golf Day for the construction association and donates to organizations like the Kingston Construction Association and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Genuine efforts are made to maintain an open and transparent dialogue with neighbours through the quarry’s Community Liaison Committee engagements, the GIP website and site tours, the release adds.

CBM Aggregate’s Sunderland Pit won the Community Relations Award and also received the Progressive Rehabilitation Award, which recognizes the ongoing efforts of individual operators to progressively rehabilitate sites per their site plans. The pit earned its OSSGA Award spotlight for a 10.6-hectare rehabilitation. The transformation took place between March and May 2022 and saw the construction of a stable 3:1 slope and naturalized floor, which was then seeded with hydroseed to quickly vegetate the area.
