Oshawa surpasses $600 million in building permits

OSHAWA , ONT. — The City of Oshawa has surpassed $600 million in construction value for building permits in one year, shattering 10 building records including seven all-time records that were mostly set in 2015.

In 2017, Oshawa issued 2,286 building permits for a total of more than $614 million in construction value, a 35 per cent increase over the previous year, indicates a city release. Of that total, there was approximately $483.5 million in residential value, $60.2 million in government/institutional, $42.8 million in commercial construction value and $27.6 million in Industrial construction value issued last year.

In 2017, there was a total of 13,660 square metres of new government/institutional floor space, 8,789 square metres of new industrial floor space and 2,266 square metres of new commercial floor space created, the release adds.

Additionally, 1,754 new residential units – 624 townhouses, 503 apartment units, 470 single-detached, 113 accessory dwelling units and 44 semi-detached homes – were created.

“Building staff have been working at a break-neck pace with over $2 billion of construction issued in the last four years,” said Mike Leonard, Oshawa’s chief building official, in a statement. “Not only has our construction volume increased, but also the types of buildings we are reviewing are larger and more complex. In addition, the Ontario Building Code is continually becoming more sophisticated. It is vital that our level of service reflects these new realities.”
