Reynolds, Vogel leave BLG LLP to join Singleton Urquhart

TORONTO — Bruce Reynolds and Sharon Vogel, key players of Construction Lien Act reform in Ontario, have left Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) to join the British Columbia-based firm Singleton Urquhart and form Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP.

The firm will continue to operate under the name Singleton Reynolds.

The lawyers co-authored a 299-page report titled Striking the Balance: Expert Review of Ontario’s Construction Lien Act, after being commissioned by the province in February 2015.

The review ultimately led to amendments to the 33-year-old act — Bill 142, the Construction Lien Amendment Act, 2017 — which achieved royal assent in the legislature in December 2017.

Key elements that were recommended by the lawyers included the introduction of prompt payment rules and the establishment of an adjudication mechanism that provides an interim binding resolution of disputes in order to solve them faster.

According to the website, the firm Reynolds and Vogel have joined includes 53 lawyers and “handles a wide spectrum of construction, insurance, corporate and commercial cases, and conduct general litigation, including professional liability and wrongful-dismissal cases. They also consult on public policy and have extensive local and international experience in alternative dispute resolution.”
