Toronto dominates latest Q1 2024 RLB Crane Index

Toronto dominates latest Q1 2024 RLB Crane Index

PHOENIX — Toronto continued its dominance in 2024 in Rider Levett Bucknall’s biannual Crane Index for 14 North American cities.

RLB’s recently released Q1 2024 crane index indicated Toronto has almost four-and-a-half times more cranes active on construction sites than the second-place city.

The report covers cities where RLB has offices.

In order, listing the city and the number of cranes counted, Toronto was tops with 221; Los Angeles, 50; Seattle, 38; Calgary, 20; Denver, 14; Boston, 14; Washington, D.C., 12; Honolulu, 12; Las Vegas, 10; Portland, 9; San Francisco, 8; Phoenix, 7; New York, 5; Chicago, 3.

Toronto was down 19 cranes from the last count.

Calgary, Las Vegas and Los Angeles have seen an increase in crane counts; Honolulu, Phoenix, Seattle and Toronto are holding steady; and cities with a decrease of more than 20 per cent included Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York City, Portland, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Across the continent, RLB reported, the beginning of 2024 shows a continued downward trend in cranes counts, as many projects approach completion at a slower rate than new projects are breaking ground. The majority of the cranes continue to be stationed at residential or mixed-use projects, making up 73 per cent of the overall count.

The survey reports a decrease of nine per cent (43 cranes) from the Q3 2023 edition of the RLB Crane Index. Cranes are down 18 per cent from the same time last year, a difference of 94 cranes.

RLB commented: “Despite the continued downturn in cranes, we remain cautiously optimistic. Ongoing investment in manufacturing and infrastructure will help offset any decline in privately funded projects in 2024.

“Overall, construction spending will be driven by public funding for manufacturing and infrastructure projects.”
