Newfoundland to renovate, replace RCMP detachments

Journal Of Commerce

Newfoundland and Labrador plans to repair or replace five police detachments, some of which area nearly 60 years old. The replacement of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment at Twillingate will begin this year while renovations at St. Anthony have already started. The other three detachments scheduled for renovation or replacement are Rocky Harbour, Clarenville and Whitbourne.

The RCMP is contracted to provide police service in most of the province’s geographical area.

The replacement of the RCMP detachment at Twillingate “will begin this year,” the justice department stated in a press release, while renovations at St. Anthony have already started. The other three detachments scheduled for renovation or replacement are Rocky Harbour, Clarenville and Whitbourne.

“The five-year infrastructure plan will see significant renovations or replacement of detachments and living quarters throughout the province,” Attorney General Felix Collins stated in a press release. “Some of these buildings are up to 60 years old and no longer meet the necessary standards required to carry out present-day policing activities.”

The five year plan is contingent upon “no other emerging capital improvements being required” at other detachments, and on the accuracy of the initial cost estimates.

A new agreement between the province and the RCMP came into effect April 1. The RCMP operates in about 50 locations with 440 uniformed members, while the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary provides police services in St. John’s, Mount Pearl and the rest of Northeast Avalon, as well as the Corner Brook area and Labrador West.
