Historic York House in Fredericton, New Brunswick sold to ADI Capital

The City of Fredericton, New Brunswick has sold York House to ADI Capital Inc. for $500,000. Completed in 1893 and originally used as a high school, York House was designed by James C. Dumaresq, architect of the New Brunswick Legislative Building. ADI has agreed to preserve the exterior of the building.

The City of Fredericton, New Brunswick recently announced that York House, designed by the same architect who designed the provincial Legislative Building, has been sold to ADI Capital Inc. for $500,000.

Constructed in 1893, York House was a high school until 1925 and was originally going to be used for municipal offices. However last year, the city determined it would not be financially viable to use York House, located at 193 York Street about a kilometre west of the provincial legislature, for municipal offices.

In a May 9 press release, the city said ADI has agreed to protect the exterior of the building, which was designed by James C. Dumaresq, architect of the New Brunswick Legislative Building, St. Paul’s United Church and the Charlotte Street School.

According to the City of Fredericton Local Historic Places Register, the character-defining elements associated with York House include a three-storey brick structure with stone trimmings, projecting central tower, mansard roof, projecting windows which interrupt the mansard roof line, large, regularly spaced rectangular windows and a carved front arch keystone with 1891 dating the commencement of construction.

ADI plans to redevelop the interior to accommodate up to 12 apartments with high ceilings, period trim and mouldings.

Originally Brunswick Street Baptist Church, which bought the building in 1965, was going to demolish it and build a new church. The city agreed in 2007 to acquire York House from the church to save it from demolition. In addition to its original use as a high school, it has also been used as a teachers’ college, employment centre and youth hostel.
