TORONTO — Ontario members of the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) have issued a statement claiming a pre-election poll it commissioned of Toronto voters that puts the governing Liberals in third place shows the Liberals are “paying a price” for passing Schedule 14, contained in Bill 31.
The measures, approved by the legislature amid other budget implementation measures and given royal assent May 8, just before the election call, affect the collective bargaining rights of numerous LIUNA members working in the ICI formwork sector.
The poll was undertaken by Campaign Research and represented a random sample of 1,871 Toronto voters between May 13 and 16.
The survey found the Liberals ahead by at least 10 per cent of decided voters in only two Toronto-area ridings, the NDP ahead by at least 15 per cent in five ridings and the Progressive Conservatives leading by at least 10 per cent in the other 15 ridings. Three ridings were contested.
The PCs led in all suburbs and were dominating North York and Scarborough, with 47 per cent of Scarborough voters indicating support for the PCs, 27 per cent for the NDP and 20 per cent for the Liberals, with undecided voters factored out.
Campaign Research said a probability sample of this size would have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
Ontario voters go to the polls June 7.
