Federal government takes action to decarbonize government buildings

OTTAWA — The federal government has awarded a contract to the firm Sustainability Solutions Group to study and make recommendations on how federal buildings can be decarbonized.

A recent release said the year-long process would be one of the tools developed to “inform capital investment decisions, guide future collaborative work with other levels of government and enable low-carbon federal operations.”

The value of the contract is just over $2 million. The release said the federal government is tracking its energy use and greenhouse gas emissions as part of the Greening Government Strategy. The targeted federal goal is to reduce emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 relative to 2005 levels.

“Greener practices have environmental, economic and social benefits for all Canadians, including improved air and water quality, and reduced operating costs. This is why our government is taking a broad approach to decreasing the impact of its activities,” said Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Accessibility Carla Qualtrough in the statement.

“Through our low-carbon roadmap, we are proud to play a leadership role in designing better and more sustainable government buildings.”
