BRAMPTON, ONT. — The federal government and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) have announced funding for erosion protection caused by intense weather events at 111 locations in the Region of Peel, York Region and the City of Toronto over the next 10 years.
The funding will support the Toronto Region Ravine Erosion Management and Hazard Mitigation Project, targeting erosion and slope instability that damages residential and commercial properties, recreational trails, roads, watermains and sanitary sewer lines, stated an April 3 release.
The federal government is contributing $22 million to the project through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund. The TRCA’s partner municipalities are covering the remainder.
“Taking measures to prevent erosion along the ravine system will help protect families and businesses in Toronto, Peel and York during severe storms and the spring thaw,” commented federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Francois-Philippe Champagne in the statement.
