Yukon town receives government funding for infrastructure upgrades

FARO, YUKON — The federal, territorial and municipal governments have announced funding for water, sewer and road upgrades in the Town of Faro, Yukon.

The first phase of the project will see upgrades to watermains and water service lines as well as the renewal of sanitary sewer mains, stated a July 11 release.

The project also calls for the replacement of approximately three kilometres of public roads and utility access roads.

The federal government is allocating $8.2 million to the project through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan. The Yukon government will contribute $2.7 million to the project.

In May, the federal government announced the awarding of a contract for the next phase of the North Fork Rose Creek realignment project at the Faro Mine site, part of the broader Faro Mine remediation project.

R. Pelly Construction Ltd. was the successful bidder on the $44.4-million project, which is required to prevent the creek from coming into contact with contaminated water on the site, a May 31 release stated.

The Faro Mine is an abandoned lead–zinc mine and one of the largest contaminated sites in Canada. Processing of minerals at the mine left behind 70 million tonnes of tailings and 320 million tonnes of waste rock.

The realignment of North Fork Rose Creek includes the construction of a new 1.9-kilometre water channel, road construction, water management and other related works.
