Ontario reports 15 stop work orders at construction sites

TORONTO — Ontario’s Ministry of Labour has reported that as of April 16 there have been 15 stop work orders issued by ministry inspectors related to COVID-19 inspections.

The ministry started tracking orders related to COVID-19 on construction jobsites March 26.

In some cases, inspections resulted from complaints while with others, there were proactive site visits. 

Details of the stop work orders are as follows, with each site subjected to a stop work order listed:

  • On April 9, there were complaints related to physical distancing, lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and lack of control measures implemented at a worksite on Dufferin Street in Toronto. Five orders were given including the stop work order.
  • On April 8, a proactive inspection of a site on Monk Street in Ottawa resulted in two orders.
  • On April 8, a proactive visit to a worksite at 12700 Highway 50 in Bolton yielded two orders.
  • On April 3, there was a proactive inspection of a jobsite on Rivermont Road in Brampton that resulted in five orders.
  • The same day, there were five orders given following an inspection of a site on
  • Richmond Street in Toronto stemming from a complaint regarding physical distancing.
  • On April 2, there was an inspection of a worksite on Hurontario Street in Mississauga based on complaints of a lack of toilet facilities and sanitizing onsite and also regarding physical distancing. Three orders were given.
  • The same day, investigation of a site on Atlantic Avenue in Toronto prompted by a complaint of a general lack of hygiene related to COVID-19 yielded two orders.
  • The previous day, an inspector gave three orders related to a site on Richmond Street West in Toronto stemming from a positive test for COVID-19.
  • Also on April 1, a proactive inspection of a jobsite on Rymal Road East in Hamilton yielded four orders.
  • On March 31, a jobsite on Cordova Avenue in Toronto was inspected following complaints of lack of hygiene and measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and that policies and procedures posted by the employer regarding the virus were not being followed. Two orders were given.
  • The same day, there were three orders given for a jobsite on Dundas Street West in Toronto following complaints of lack of distancing and sanitary practices.
  • On March 30, an inspection of a site on Grand Magazine Street in Toronto prompted by a complaint of general lack of hygiene related to COVID-19 yielded three orders.
  • On March 27, an inspection of a site on Yonge Street in East Gwillimbury stemming from a complaint of general lack of hygiene related to COVID-19 resulted in two orders.
  • The previous day, a site on Manitoba Street in Toronto was inspected following complaints of lack of physical distancing, PPE and hand washing stations. Two orders were given.
