North Bay welcoming of funds for transit projects

NORTH BAY, ONT. — The federal, provincial and various municipal governments have announced funding for 15 transit and active transportation projects to be undertaken in the North Bay, Ont. region.

Improvements to the North Bay Transit terminal, new bicycle storage areas at key cycling destinations and bicycle racks on buses are intended to ease the transition between active transportation and public transit, stated a recent release.

There will also be improvements to para-transit buses, new bus shelters with solar-powered lighting and new digital bus stop signs.

In Chisholm, upgrades to Alderdale Road will improve safety for emergency vehicles and commuters, the release said. There will also be improvements to Dorion Road in Mattawa, the Murphy Road Bridge will be replaced in Mattawan Township and Maple Hill Road will be upgraded in Powassan.

The federal government is spending $13.4 million on the projects through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream and the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan. The Government of Ontario is also allocating $8.9 million while the municipalities of North Bay, Chisholm, Mattawa, Mattawan Township and Powassan are contributing $8.7 million.

“With this investment in our public transit system we will be able to move ahead with important infrastructure improvements and implement new transportation initiatives that will enhance services and create efficiencies,” commented North Bay Mayor Al McDonald in the statement.
