Durham Police make arrest in theft of construction equipment

WHITBY, ONT. — A 33-year-old Markham, Ont. man has been arrested and Durham Police investigators have recovered stolen construction equipment worth approximately $400,000 after conducting two search warrants.

Members of the Durham East Division Community Response Team launched an investigation of stolen construction equipment in December 2022. During the investigation, investigators executed two search warrants and recovered eight machines including excavators, skid steers and tractors.

The machines had fake vehicle identification numbers (VIN) and the suspect was trafficking the equipment.

Ramki Sasithasan was charged with five counts of possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking over $5,000, four counts of trafficking in property obtained by crime over $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, three counts of possession of proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000, four counts of alter/destroy/remove VIN, two counts of false pretences, and one count of failing to comply with a release order.

The suspect was held for a bail hearing.
