OTTAWA — The federal government has announced the appointment of Charl van Niekerk to the position of CEO of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA), the Crown corporation responsible for the delivery of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project.

Van Niekerk recently held the position of executive vice-president of transportation with Infrastructure Ontario. He has managed the delivery of a number of provincial highway, subway and rail projects, including the Herb Gray Parkway that connects to the Gordie Howe International Bridge, and has global experience in the construction, operations, and engineering industry, stated a release.

The Gordie Howe bridge project between Windsor, Ont. and Detroit is being delivered through a public-private partnership by the WDBA. The authority is responsible for overseeing and managing the construction and operation of the new crossing.

The $5.7-billion bridge has multiple components, including the cable stay bridge itself; a Canadian Port of Entry along the Canada-United States border; a United States Port of Entry; the Michigan Interstate 75 Interchange; and approach bridges on both sides of the border.
