KITCHENER, ONT. — The federal government has announced $96 million in contributions and low-cost loans through the Affordable Housing Fund to help build and repair 7,685 affordable homes in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and neighbouring communities in Ontario.
The announcement took place at 82 Wilson Ave., Kitchener, at an affordable housing project that received $2.4 million to build 48 homes and will be operated by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, stated a release. The building is energy efficient and universally designed, offering units to low-income households from the region’s social housing waitlist.
The funding will help create a total of 336 new homes and is leading to the repairs of 7,349 homes. The Affordable Housing Fund provides funding through low-interest or forgivable loans or contributions to help build new affordable homes and renovate and repair existing, affordable and community housing.
Larger projects include: 82 Wilson Avenue, Kitchener, $2.4 million; ShelterCare, Waterloo, $2.4 million; Region of Waterloo Portfolio repairs, $12 million; St. Mark’s Place, Kitchener, $2.1 million; Guelph Non-Profit Housing Corporation Repairs, $5.4 million; County of Wellington Repairs, $12 million; City of Brantford Housing Stock Repairs, $6 million; County of Oxford Repairs, Woodstock, $3.2 million; Norfolk County Repairs, $2.3 million; Perth and Stratford Housing Corporation Repairs, Stratford, $2.5 million; Grey County Repairs, Owen Sound, $3.5 million; Odawa Heights Apartment, Owen Sound, $2.8 million.
