Carpenters’ Regional Council endorses Carney

OTTAWA — The Carpenters’ Regional Council has announced it will be endorsing Liberal Party Leader Mark Carney as Canada’s next prime minister.

In a letter, Tom Cardinal, president and chief of staff of the council, says Carney has the experience and leadership to guide Canada through these uncertain times.

“His government will continue to invest in our current and future skilled tradespeople, ensuring they have the supports they need to complete their apprenticeship, increased labour mobility, and a steady supply of work building the housing, transportation, and energy projects of the future,” he writes.

Cardinal highlighted several components of Carney’s campaign pledges the Carpenters’ support, including:

  • Providing an apprenticeship grant of up to $8,000 for apprentices to receive training.
  • Doubling UTIP to fund more union-led training initiatives.
  • Continuing the Apprenticeship Service Program.
  • lncreasing labour mobility of tradespeople and expanding the Labour Mobility Tax

Deduction.

  • Speeding up approvals processes for new projects.
  • Investing in homebuilding, prioritizing mass timber and modular construction methods.

The Carpenters’ Regional Council is an affiliate of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and represents upwards of 50,000 members.
