A Ministry of Labour inspector surveys the 18 Mile River bridge in southwestern Ontario that collapsed last weekend during a concrete pour, sending six construction workers to hospital. Officials say it’s too early to tell what caused the accident.
GODERICH, ON
While officials say it’s too early to determine the cause of the 18 Mile River bridge collapse, Mitch Twolan, Huron-Kinloss Township mayor, says he is just thankful no one was killed.
“Bridges can be fixed,” Twolan said, “but lives lost can’t be replaced.”
The 18 Mile River bridge was 80 per cent complete, but County documents report that the bridge was supposed to be finished by the end of September. Allen-Hastings Ltd., the contractor responsible for the bridge’s construction, has been fined $500 a day since missing the October 1, 2007 completion deadline.
The bridge’s $624,000 approximate cost was to be shared jointly by Huron and Bruce counties.
The contractor and labour ministry were unavailable for comment.
