Construction continues on the pedestrian tunnel that will connect Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to Toronto’s mainland. For the period of Dec. 17 to Jan. 4, construction on the mainland included excavation of the shaft located at the foot of Eireann Quay.
Excavation will remove soil and rock that will be taken offsite for disposal. Tunnelling is underway to create the crown of the tunnel to the airport. This crown will comprise seven interlocking tunnels six feet in diameter. Three of these interlocking tunnels will carry City water and sanitary mains to Toronto Island.
On Toronto Island, excavation of the island shaft is underway. This excavation will involve the removal and management of soil and rock.
The 240-metre tunnel is expected to be operational in spring 2014. The $82.5-million project will be underground and underwater and compliment the current ferry service. The tunnel will also carry City water and sewage mains.
The tunnel is being financed by the private sector and paid for by airport users via the existing BBTCA Airport Improvement Fee.
