The federal government announced Wednesday it is contributing $3.2 million towards a runway rehabilitation construction project at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF), located east of Kitchener, Ontario.

Under the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), the money will be used to “partially rehabilitate” the pavement on Runway 08-26 at the airport.

The announcement came a day after the airport opened its combined maintenance and fire hall facility, a separate project that received funding from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.

The federal government has spent a total of $556 million in ACAP funds on 678 projects at 171 airports. Most of these involved runways, taxiways and visual aids, plus fire trucks and snowplows.
