MTO announces 24 Central Ontario roadway, bridge jobs

TORONTO—The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has announced details of 24 major construction projects including improvements to highways, roads and bridges to be undertaken in Central Ontario this season.

The projects will create or sustain more than 21,000 construction jobs across the province, indicated the MTO statement.

As part of the spend, Ontario is partnering with the City of Barrie to replace the Tiffin Street overpass and repair the Barrie-Collingwood Railway overpass. The project will create or sustain approximately 270 direct or indirect construction jobs.

The $26.9-million contract for the overpasses was awarded to Dufferin Construction Company, a division of CRH Canada Group Inc. of Oakville, Ont. Work is expected to begin in July and is anticipated to be completed in fall 2018.

Other projects include:

• Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) — repairing bridges and culverts and repaving 5.2 kilometres of the QEW, from east of Hurontario Street to Highway 427 in Peel Region and Toronto

• Highway 403 — repairing bridges at Erin Mills Parkway and Hurontario Street in Peel Region

• QEW and Highway 420 — repairing the interchange and repaving 3.2 kilometres from Stanley Avenue to Montrose Road in Niagara Region

• QEW — repairing bridges and one culvert along the QEW/Highway 403/Ford Drive interchange in Halton Region

• QEW — repaving nearly seven kilometres from west of Casablanca Boulevard interchange to east of Fruitland Road interchange in Niagara Region

• Highway 3 — repaving 21.9 kilometres from Rose Hill Road to Highway 140 in Niagara Region

• Highway 6 — repaving nearly eight kilometres from Concession Road 6 to north of Regional Road 97 in Hamilton

• Highway 7/12 — repaving 15.8 kilometres from Highway 7A to Blackwater in Durham Region

• Highway 7A — repaving 4.7 kilometres from Port Perry Plaza to Highway 7/12 in Durham Region

• Highway 9 — replacing the bridge at Holland Canal in York Region

• Highway 9 — repaving 7.7 kilometres from west of Tottenham Road to west of Regional Road 50 in Peel Region and Simcoe County

• Highway 48 — repaving 28.8 kilometres from Aurora Road to south of Regional Road 9 in York Region

• Highway 48 — repaving 17.7 kilometres from north of Regional Road 9 to south of Highway 12/48 in Durham and York Regions

• Highway 400 — repairing bridges on Highway 400 at Highway 93, Oro-Medonte Line 4, and Partridge Ski Trail Road in Simcoe County

• Highway 400 — repairing the bridge at Willow Creek in Simcoe County

• Highway 400 — repaving 4.2 kilometres from Langstaff Road to Major Mackenzie Drive in York Region

• Highway 400 — repaving 6.5 kilometres from Highway 401 to Highway 7 in Toronto and York Region

• Highway 401 — replacing the bridge on the eastbound Weston Road off-ramp over the Humber River in Toronto

• Highway 401 — widening from Hurontario Street to the Credit River in Mississauga from six to 12 lanes, that would include 10 general purpose lanes and two High Occupancy Vehicle lanes in Peel Region

• Highway 401 — repaving 11.2 kilometres and repairing bridges from Bayview Avenue to Jane Street in Toronto

• Highway 403 — repairing the westbound bridge and replacing the eastbound bridge at Desjardins Canal in Hamilton

• Highway 404 — adding a noise barrier wall from Green Lane to north of Farr Avenue in York Region

• Highway 406 — repairing bridges at Highway 406 and QEW interchange in Niagara Region.
