Ontario announces eight more GO train stations
GO Transit has announced a total of 14 GO stations, as part of its Regional Express Rail (RER), that will extend or add to service for the Kitchener, Barrie, Stouffville and Lakeshore East Lines.

TORONTO—Ontario has announced plans for eight new GO Train stations, bringing its tally to 12 within a three-day period.

On the heels of the June 20 announcement of four stations for Oshawa, Courtice and Bowmanville, east of the Toronto region, the province announced four new GO stations along the Barrie and Kitchener GO lines on June 21 and then four more the next day along the Stouffville and Lakeshore East GO lines.

The eight stations are part of Metrolinx’s Regional Express Rail (RER) program that will expand transit service across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, including introducing electrification of core segments of the network by 2024.

The new stations along the Barrie and Kitchener lines will be located in the areas of Bloor and Lansdowne, Spadina and Front, Liberty Village, and St. Clair West and Keele in the City of Toronto.

The final four will be located in the areas near the Unilever site in the Donlands, Gerrard and Carlaw, and Finch East and Lawrence East in Scarborough.

The proposed new GO stations are intended to support the City of Toronto’s SmartTrack plan, the Metrolinx announcements indicate.

The stations will be considered at the June 28 Metrolinx board of directors meeting and are subject to funding availability and environmental assessment processes.

Since 2003, Ontario has extended GO’s rail network by nearly 90 kilometres, opened 14 new GO stations, rebuilt four existing stations, and added more than 31,000 new parking spots across the system.
