Feds, Toronto announced $200M for storm sewer system project

TORONTO — Federal and City of Toronto officials have announced funding for the City’s Fairbank-Silverthorn Trunk Storm Sewer System Project, part of Toronto’s basement flooding protection program.

The project consists of building a new storm sewer system in Fairbank-Silverthorn area, which will relieve pressure on the existing combined sewer system during extreme weather events, stated a June 10 release.

The project is intended to reduce the effects of flooding events for 11,500 residents, protect public utilities and reduce the impact on the environment caused by combined sewer overflows.

The federal government is allocating $73.2 million through its Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund and the City of Toronto will contribute $133.49 million.
