Concrete collapse near Gordie Howe Bridge site under investigation

Concrete collapse near Gordie Howe Bridge site under investigation
WINDSOR-DETROIT BRIDGE AUTHORITY

WINDSOR, ONT. – The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) has released a statement on the collapse of a segment of roadway that occurred June 5 in the vicinity of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project on the Detroit side.

The incident occurred in the area of West Fort and Calvary Streets in Detroit. The statement said compromised concrete collapsed inward on a 100-foot section of Fort Street.

The failure occurred overnight and no workers were onsite at the time and no injuries were sustained.

The builder Bridging North America is undertaking an investigation with resources from the Michigan Department of Transportation and the WDBA to determine the cause of the collapse, the statement indicated. A temporary road closure is in place on Fort Street between Livernois Avenue and Campbell Street. It is anticipated that the bridge authority will open one lane in each direction in the coming days.

“This is an isolated incident and does not impact the overall construction schedule for the project,” stated the WDBA.

A further update will be issued during a streamed public meeting June 15 live on Facebook at 3 p.m.
