BREAKING: Hydro One investigating crane on barge as cause of Toronto power outage
HYDRO ONE — Hydro One is now working on a transmission circuit that was clipped by a crane in the Port Lands earlier today. "We know this has made today exceptionally difficult for many of you, and we appreciate your patience," stated the energy firm on Twitter.

TORONTO — Toronto Police and Toronto Hydro reported a large power outage in downtown Toronto after noon today (Aug. 11).

Video has appeared online showing a crane in contact with hydro wires. A spokesperson from Hydro One said the agency is investigating reports that a barge carrying a crane that was extended came into contact with high voltage lines in the Port Lands area of Toronto.

Various reports have said the outage includes the financial district of downtown including the Eaton Centre and Toronto Police headquarters. The Toronto Hydro outage map showed a large area with no power, from the Don Valley Parkway on the east and encompassing Cabbagetown South.

“We continue to try and reroute power to bring Toronto Hydro customers back as safely and quickly as possible. #DarkTO,” stated Hydro One.

More information will follow.
