Mount Pleasant Station restored to original Imperial Bank design
METROLINX — As part of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project in Toronto, the heritage façade of Mount Pleasant Station, formerly an Imperial Bank Building, has been restored following construction of the station.

TORONTO — Heritage façade work is now complete at Mount Pleasant Station in Toronto and the front entrance for the Eglinton Crosstown station has been restored to its original Imperial Bank design.

Metrolinx announced completion of the project on its blog recently. The station is part of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit (LRT) project.

The heritage façade is an important part of the architecture for the structure, states the blog, adding it also plays a big role in conserving Toronto’s history.

For this reason, it was important for Metrolinx to preserve the façade of the building during construction.

The former Imperial Bank building façade stood on the corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Eglinton Avenue East for almost 90 years.

To prepare for Mount Pleasant Station construction, crews took the building down in 2016.

During construction, crews carefully labelled, catalogued and stored all the façade’s bricks in an off-site facility and when the team built the main entrance for the station, they used the exact same bricks to construct it. The building appears almost identical before and after construction.

The next step for the station is to continue testing and commissioning station equipment. Road restoration and landscaping work will follow.
