PICKERING, ONT. — Aecon Group Inc. and AtkinsRéalis have been awarded a $2.1 billion contract by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for early engineering and procurement work as part of the retube feeder and boiler replacement program for the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station’s “B” units.
The joint venture, known as CanAtom, will carry out work for Units 5, 6, 7 and 8 at the nuclear generating station. The scope of work is for “definition phase activities including engineering, procurement of long-lead components, and construction planning for the multi-unit refurbishment,” a release reads.
Planning and early works are underway, and completion of this phase is expected in 2026.
Once refurbished, Pickering would produce more than 2,000 megawatts of electricity, which is equivalent to powering two million homes.
Based on OPG’s preliminary schedule, the entire refurbishment is anticipated to be completed by the mid-2030s.
In addition to the work delivered by CanAtom, the retube feeder and boiler replacement program will also be supported by BWXT Canada in Peterborough and Cambridge, Nutech in Arnprior, Cameco in Port Hope and NWI Precision in Toronto.
The Ontario government is supporting OPG’s $4.1 billion budget for this phase of work, bringing the total investment to date in the project to $6.2 billion.
OPG has also committed to spending $100 million with Indigenous companies over the life of the refurbishment project.
CanAtom is currently executing OPG’s four-unit Darlington Refurbishment Project, where three units have been finished ahead of schedule. The project is over 85 per cent complete in its 10-year execution phase.
The Conference Board of Canada projects the full Pickering refurbishment project would create 11,000 jobs per year while contributing $19.4 billion to Ontario’s GDP over 11 years.
