KINGSTON, ONT. — Construction has officially started and a design contract has been awarded for the new 21 Electronic Warfare Regiment facility at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Kingston.

Colbourne & Kembel Architects Inc. of Kingston will be undertaking the design work.

The $98-million, 8,350 mfacility will consolidate units across CFB Kingston into one secure compound, explains a release.

The two-storey multipurpose building will include new classrooms and administrative spaces, and it will also house the Logistics Vehicle Modernization platforms, light and heavy trucks, and the Electronic Warfare, Mobile Repair Team and Maintenance Recovery Vehicle variants of the Armoured Combat Support Vehicle. Maintenance bays will also be constructed.

The facility will be built to meet the Canada Green Building Council’s Zero-Carbon Building Performance Standards.

High-efficiency heating and cooling systems and onsite solar power generation to offset the building’s electrical demand are some measures being carried out.

The 21 Electronic Warfare Regiment is comprised of both reserve and regular force members and provides tactical electronic warfare support to Canadian Armed Forces operations. This support can take a variety of forms, such as intercepting and analyzing foreign communications, and installing and maintaining radio, satellite, and broadband technology.

During construction, the project will sustain approximately 150 jobs in the region, the release adds, and it is expected to be operational in 2028.
