The federal government has launched a new initiative that provides cash to apprentices who complete their first or second year in a Red Seal trade program.
James Moore, Member of Parliament for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam launched the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant in British Columbia and Yukon. The grant provides a $1,000 cash grant per year to registered apprentices who have completed their first or second year in a designated Red Seal trade program, on or after Jan. 1, 2007.
It will help apprentices achieve their goals by offsetting the costs of tuition, travel and tools.
“The new $1,000 Apprenticeship Incentive Grant will help thousands of young apprentices every year in British Columbia and Yukon succeed and assist businesses that need staff with the right expertise,” Moore said.
The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant is one of the measures introduced by the government to assist apprentices, tradespeople and employers looking for workers trained in skilled trades .
In May 2006, the government introduced the Tradesperson’s Tools Deduction to help tradespeople save on the cost of work-related tools.
It also introduced the Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit to provide employers with up to $2,000 per apprentice hired for each of the first two years of their apprenticeship contract.
The new Apprenticeship Incentive Grant program investment will cost taxpayers $125 million.
