TORONTO

Members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 46 hope that the annual scholarship program and backpack giveaway will give students from the west end Toronto neighbourhood of Firgrove incentive to go further with their education.

“For kids from a neighbourhood like that, a scholarship or backpack, a little help might be just what they need to help change their situation,” said District Council 46 business representative Greg Smith.

The scholarship fund sprouted from community member Maryann Hilowle who wanted to help her neighbours in similar situations after she completed university and paid off her student loans and IUPAT stepped up to help build on the idea.

“Maryann and Barry Rieder of the Jane-Finch Community Ministry work tirelessly to try and help their community, we just give them assistance,” said Smith.

IUPAT has worked with the Firgrove Tenant Association and the Jane-Finch Community Ministry for the last seven years, donating $1,000-scholarships and about one thousand backpacks filled with school supplies specified for each grade level from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. IUPAT also supports the Firgrove Women’s Group.

Scholarships are based on a students’ involvement within their community. This year, $1,000-scholarships were awarded to Shannon Holness, Safia Osman and Admad Osman.
