UPDATE: Construction worker dies in fall from Billy Bishop airport roof

TORONTO — A 41-year-old male construction worker has died after falling off the roof of a building at Billy Bishop airport on Toronto Island mid-morning yesterday (March 27).

The Ministry of Labour determined the worker was an employee of Vixman Construction Ltd., a subcontractor of PCL Constructors Canada Inc. PCL is working on the site upgrading the terminal at the airport.

Police reported they received a call after 10 a.m. relating to an incident that occurred at a building on the south side of the airport.

A volunteer firefighter on the scene attempted life-saving maneouvres including CPR and police and emergency workers, including the airport’s own fire department, were summoned but the worker was pronounced dead on the scene.

A PortsToronto statement said, “Billy Bishop Airport staff is fully co-operating with the investigation into this incident…We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the gentleman involved in this accident, and are deeply saddened by this unfortunate turn of events.”

PCL also released a statement: “PCL is deeply shocked and saddened by the incident that happened this morning at our Billy Bishop Airport construction site, resulting in the death of a worker following a fall from heights. Our sincerest condolences go out to everyone affected by this tragedy.”

The Ministry of Labour issued issued two requirements to PCL to secure the scene and provide documentation.

Two requirements were also issued to Vixman to provide fall protection equipment and documentation. A ministry spokesperson said the investigation is continuing.
