Worker dies on sewer project in Stoney Creek

STONEY CREEK, ONT. — A worker has died working underground on a sewer project in Stoney Creek, Ont.

On June 21, the Ministry of Labour (MOL) was advised of an incident at a construction project located at 55 Regional Road. It was reported that a worker had been involved in an incident while operating machinery in a tunnel and that the worker had passed away, the MOL indicated in an email to the Daily Commercial News.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 1:45 p.m.

“There was a worker who was injured and required our assistance,” explained Claudio Mostacci, a public information officer with the Hamilton Fire Department.

“We dispatched the confined space rescue because the individual was 100 feet down and 100 feet in a tunnel. We responded and the paramedics pronounced while we were there so then it became the scene for the Ministry of Labour and the coroner. There were other workers down at the bottom, they were all assisted out, none of them were injured.”

While the scene turned into a recovery effort, Mostacci said firefighters remained to assist with the investigation.

“We assisted the coroner, the forensic and Ministry of Labour people down so they could inspect the site and then after they were finished doing the investigation, we assisted in the recovery,” said Mostacci, who left the scene after 5 p.m. .

The $52-million project involves installing a trunk sanitary sewer to Binbrook, Ont. The Ministry of Labour has confirmed the employer who holds the contract is McNally Construction.

The MOL issued one requirement to McNally Construction Inc. not to disturb the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
