Ironworkers look to ratify deal March 28, 29

The Ironworkers District Council of Ontario has reached a tentative contract agreement with the Ironworkers Employer Bargaining Agency, with ratification scheduled for the end of the month.

The ICI ironworkers follow the electrical sector, which reached a deal Feb. 17.

Ironworkers’ union executive Kevin Bryenton had predicted his sector would make good progress with the electrical sector settled. He said he would release terms of the tentative deal once ratification is reached. The ironworkers will vote March 28 and 29.

Ironworkers’ employer representative Jack Mesley could not be reached for comment.

The electrical sector’s settlement was for an 8.8-per-cent wage increase over three years, with a total hike of $6.05 per hour plus an escalator clause to match other large increases.

Under provincial legislation collective agreements in the ICI sector expire every three years, with this term’s deadline set for April 30.

Wayne Peterson, executive director of the Construction Employers Coordinating Council of Ontario, said he will host a conference call with all of the employer bargaining representatives to obtain updates on negotiations on March 26.

March 1 marked the beginning of open season for union representation with unions permitted to raid each other’s members through displacement applications and members able to decertify from their current bargaining agent through termination applications.

“There have not been any that I’m aware of as yet but that said they could come from left field at any time until a conciliation officer is appointed,” Peterson said.
