Siamak Hariri to receive honorary doctorate from OCAD University

TORONTO — In recognition of his outstanding achievements and leadership in advancing architectural design, OCAD University will bestow an honorary doctorate on Siamak Hariri at the university’s spring convocation at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto June 14.

Hariri is founding partner of Hariri Pontarini Architects, which was founded almost four decades ago.

Among Hariri’s notable works include the Bahá’í Temple of South America in Santiago, Chile; the Tom Patterson Theatre at the Stratford Festival; Casey House; and the BARLO MS Centre in Toronto, indicates a release.

For the Art Gallery of Ontario, Hariri designed the Weston Family Learning Centre, the South Entrance and Grange Park Pavilions.

Current projects for the cultural sector include OpenROM, a reimagining of the Royal Ontario Museum’s main floor and Bloor Street plaza; the renewal of the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts; an expansion of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg; and art galleries at York University and Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C.

The firm has won more than 100 awards, including five Governor General’s Medals in Architecture and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Architectural Firm Award and Innovation in Architecture Award, adds the release.

Hariri was born in Germany. He was educated at the University of Waterloo and Yale University where he completed a master of architecture. He has sat on the advisory board of the Royal Ontario Museum’s Institute of Contemporary Culture, the Toronto Community Foundation, and was a member of Waterfront Toronto’s Design Review Panel. He has taught studios at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto and has been a lecturer, guest critic and jury member for numerous organizations across North America and Europe.
