OTTAWA — The Skills Council of Canada and Mohawk College have announced a new partnership aimed at building skills development in the construction sector for underserved and vulnerable communities through City School by Mohawk in Hamilton.
Both partners will contribute expertise and resources to develop education and training programs, stated a release. The programs will integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience and will be conducted at various locations, including mobile classrooms and the Trades Lab at the Eva Rothwell Centre in Hamilton.
The training will involve five cohorts, each offering 60 to 80 hours of instruction and hands-on learning opportunities. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion from Mohawk College, with their achievements documented on their transcripts.
Workers being targeted include those facing various barriers to employment, including prior involvement in the criminal justice system, BIPOC and Indigenous people and those with disabilities.
The partnership will include social impact projects, such as the construction of community sheds, to further integrate learning with community development.
“This partnership with Skills Council of Canada will extend City School’s ability to deliver impactful training and education to even more people in our community,” said Jake Ohanian, Mohawk College manager of strategic partnerships in a statement. “We look forward to working together to provide participants with the opportunity to continue their educational journey and secure meaningful work in high-demand fields.”
