TORONTO—Union members from Carpenters’ Local 27, the Drywall Acoustic Lathing and Insulation Local 675, Residential Local 1030 and the Carpenters’ council staff were among those who took part in the 153rd annual Labour Day Parade in Toronto Sep. 2.
This year’s theme was Workers Shape Our Future, celebrating the fight for justice and dignity. Participants marched along Queen Street from University Avenue to the CNE. Following the parade, a luncheon was held in Vaughan.
Chris Campbell, president of Carpenters’ Union Local 27, spoke at the event and reflected on the history of the chapter, which was established on April 18, 1882.
“The founding members and their families made tremendous sacrifices to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and the eight-hour workday,” said Campbell in his address.
“Their efforts have resulted in some of the most robust collective agreements in the labour movement, agreements that have stood the test of time and have provided a foundation upon which we continue to build…I want to express our deep gratitude for the commitment and legacy they have left behind. We are here because they fought for us.”
