TORONTO — September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) will be hosting free Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing for members of the Building Trades Unions.
The IUPAT is partnering with The Walnut Foundation, Princess Margaret Hospital and Tiabu Community to host the clinic at its union hall, located at 132 Toro Road in North York. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The theme is Detect and Protect. The PSA blood test is available to those 40 years old or older.
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer, and the third leading cause of cancer death in men. One in eight men, or one in six Black men, in Canada will be diagnosed with the disease. Black men are two times as likely to die from prostate cancer than other populations.
“As members of Building Trades Unions, I believe it’s our responsibility as union leaders to educate our members on the danger of the disease as part of health and safety as early detection can save lives,” said Ivan Dawns, political director of the IUPAT, in an email to the Daily Commercial News, adding he hopes to make the testing clinic an annual event.
