TORONTO – The United Steelworkers union (USW) has released a statement praising the Aug. 26 announcement by the federal government to impose tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum and electric vehicles from China.
“We are pleased to see the federal government taking a more assertive role to support high-quality jobs here in Canada and create more balanced trade,” said Marty Warren, USW national director, in a statement. “Canadians want to see the government taking action to protect and create good jobs in Canada. Our government can and should be more aggressive in stopping unfair trade, for the benefit of jobs in our local communities.”
In a recent submission to the Department of Finance, the USW urged the federal government to
exercise its authority pursuant to section 53 of the Customs Tariff to address Chinese trade practices. China has a record of dumping excess capacity and trade circumvention, the submission stated, in addition to a poor protection of labour and human rights and lax environmental protection.
The tariff on Chinese EVs will take effect Oct. 1, while the new steel and aluminum tariffs are effective Oct. 15.
