Admiral Welding & Mfg. Inc. was fined $40,000 on July 16 for occupational health and safety violations after a co-op student was injured.

On May 19, 2009, a co-op student with a Beamsville, Ont.-based Admiral Welding was using a brake press to bend a large piece of steel. The student’s hands were caught between the upper and lower dies of the press, causing injuries, according to the Ontario Minstry of Labour.

A ministry investigation found that the brake press did not have a guard to prevent access to the pinch point between the upper and lower dies.

Admiral Welding pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that any part of a machine that may endanger the safety of any worker shall be equipped with and guarded by a guard or other device that prevents access to the pinch point.
