Alberta safety and building inspectors are investigating the partial collapse of a roof that was under construction at a Calgary seniors centre.

“What we need to know at this point is whether or not this was a structural issue with the building or an error on the part of the companies involved with the roofing,” said Barrie Harrison, spokesperson for Alberta Occupational health and Safety.

“A pallet of roofing material weighing 3,000 pounds fell through the roof of the dining hall, at an extended care facility. No one was injured.”

About three dozen staff and residents were in the dining room of the facility when the incident happened.

The collapse triggered the sprinkler system. The whole building got wet, but, no residents were displaced.

As a precautionary measure, the Calgary Fire Department removed all workers, materials and equipment from the roof.

They also shored up and secured the damaged area of the building.

The contractor on the project is Cantebury Roofing, which hired Stampede Crane and Rigging to place the material on the roof.

“We are looking to see if both companies followed proper procedures and protocol for ensuring the roof could handle the load,” Harrison said. The City of Calgary Development Building Approvals is also investigating the incident.

Harrison said Occupational Health and Safety issued a stop-work order.

However, work restarted on April 18, after the site owner provided an engineering report.

City engineering officials said all the buildings services in the ceiling, including electrical, mechanical, sprinkler, heating and venting, required repairs.
