The Newfoundland and Labrador government recently announced that Oceanside Roofing Inc. of Flatrock, plus a supervisor, was fined $2,000 for violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act provisions on fall arrest systems.
“The charges arose from an inspection conducted by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch at a construction site at Castle Bridge Subdivision in St. John’s on June 28, 2012,” according to a press release from the Service NL ministry, whose responsibilities include workplace safety.
In addition to the fine imposed on the company, the provincial court in St. John’s also fined a company supervisor a total of $1,250.
The corporation pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to ensure that a fall arrest system was adequately secured to an anchorage point or lifeline.
The supervisor pleaded guilty to failing as a supervisor to ensure another worker wore fall protection and for failing as a worker to ensure that his own fall arrest system was secured to an anchorage point or lifeline. He was fined $750 as a supervisor and $500 as a worker.
