TORONTO—Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) has issued a statement indicating that the former engineer facing charges in the Algo Centre Mall roof collapse, Robert Wood, is not a professional engineer and should not be referred to as such. Referring to Wood as a “former engineer” would be accurate, says the statement issued Sept. 7.
Wood’s licence was suspended in November 2011 and revoked in November 2012 as a result of an order from the PEO discipline committee stemming from a matter unrelated to the tragedy in Elliot Lake, Ont.
Wood has pleaded not guilty to three charges stemming from the 2012 collapse of the Elliot Lake mall. His trial began Sept. 6 in Sault Ste Marie and is scheduled for five months.
Wood is charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
Doloris Perizzolo, 74, and Lucie Aylwin, 37, died on June 23, 2012, when the Algo Centre Mall’s rooftop parking deck collapsed.
In Canada, the titles "engineer" and "professional engineer" are restricted by law, the PEO statement says. In Ontario, only those individuals who have demonstrated that they possess the necessary qualifications and are currently licensed by PEO can use these titles, which are often abbreviated as "P.Eng."
