RICHMOND HILL, ONT. — York Regional Police have issued a public warning regarding the dangers of trespassing in construction sites and the potential to be charged criminally after a spree of incidents in which numerous people, primarily youths, have been charged for climbing construction cranes.
On Monday, May 22, shortly before 9 p.m., police were called to a construction site on Yonge Street, north of 19th Avenue in the Town of Richmond Hill, following a report of a group of youths trespassing. When officers arrived they located a group of six youths climbing down the ladder of a 12-storey crane.
At approximately the same time, police were dispatched to another construction site located in the area of Leslie Street and 16th Avenue where another group of six youths had scaled a crane at a construction site.
Parents of the youths visited both scenes and all of the youths were charged under the Trespass to Property Act. The incidents are not believed to be connected.
On Saturday, May 27, shortly after 3 a.m., police were called to a construction site in the area of Main and Lloyd streets in the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville after two people were spotted on a 10-storey construction crane. As officers were gaining access to the site, one person climbed down and fled. As firefighters were preparing to get the second person down from the crane, he climbed down himself without injury. A 22-year-old man from the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville was charged criminally with mischief.
On Sunday, June 11, shortly after 9 p.m., police were summoned to the area of Yonge and Eagle streets in the Town of Newmarket after two people were spotted at the top of a 13-storey construction crane. Both male youths climbed down and were arrested by officers. Both of the 16-year-olds were charged with mischief and entering a premise when entry is prohibited under the Trespass to Property Act.
