Precast concrete company fined $90,000 after worker suffers cutting injury

Precast concrete company fined $90,000 after worker suffers cutting injury

DUNDAS, ONT. — Coreslab Structures Inc. in Dundas, Ont. has been fined $90,000 after a worker was injured operating a shear machine to cut rebar.

The worker lifted a shield to hold the rebar in position and when the worker turned the machine on, a clamp closed which resulted in injuries.

The incident took place Aug. 3, 2018 at the company’s plant located at 205 Coreslab Drive in Dundas. The company is a producer of precast-prestressed concrete products.

Coreslab was convicted and fined July 28, 2021 following a guilty plea in provincial offences court in Hamilton, Ont.

According to a court bulletin, Section 25 of the Industrial Establishment Regulation requires an in-running nip hazard or any part of a machine, device or thing, that may endanger the safety of any worker shall be equipped with and guarded by a guard or other device that prevents access to the pinch point. The defendant failed to ensure that the measures and procedures prescribed by section 25 of the regulation were carried out in the workplace, contrary to section 25(1)(c) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, adds the release.
