Cement plant explosion injures three workers

PICTON, ONT. — Three workers were injured following an explosion at the Lehigh Cement plant in Picton, Ont.

Prince Edward County (PEC) Fire and Rescue responded to initial reports of an explosion Sept. 7 at approximately 8:45 a.m.

When they arrived at the plant, two workers with burn injuries were in the care of paramedics and transported to Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital, Bernie Dunphy, secretary, clerical with PEC Fire and Rescue, said in an email to the Daily Commercial News. A third worker was also injured during the incident. PEC Fire and Rescue assisted to stabilize and secure the scene.

The incident is now under investigation by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development as well as the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office with support from the Technical Standards and Safety Authority.

The investigation is ongoing.
