A video of a man dangling from a crane load at a construction site in downtown Toronto posted on Instagram Tuesday (July 5) has gone viral.
PCL Constructors Canada has confirmed the individual is a worker on the jobsite.
“We can confirm that an incident took place at our site located at Front and Simcoe yesterday involving a rigger who got entangled with a tagline after hooking a load,” stated a PCL spokesperson in an email to the Daily Commercial News. “Fortunately, he was safely lowered to the work surface and not seriously injured. The safety of all workers and the community is our top priority. We are working with all appropriate authorities and the incident is currently under investigation.”
The video, captioned, “Meanwhile in Toronto today….” shows what appears to be a construction worker dangling from the crane being lowered to the ground.
Two men can be heard shouting “how did this happen?” and telling the worker to “hang on” and “just let your hard hat fall.”
Just above the worker is a load of material being lowered by the crane and as the two get closer to the ground one man yells “stop before he gets crushed.”
The video was posted by my_S1. According to its website, S1 is a fully customizable H&S System designed specifically to enhance the way we communicate, train and provide safety information to workers.
Toronto Police and Toronto Fire stated they did not receive any calls regarding the incident.
The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) was notified of the incident on July 5. It is being reported that the employer is Modern Niagara.
An MLITSD inspector has been assigned to the incident and is currently on site. The investigation is ongoing.
